In this series of presentations, LCDR Michele Kerns, IHS Emergency Management Specialist, provides an overview of ticks of public health importance in the United States, their geographic distribution, and the diseases they transmit. Participants will learn to recognize major tick species, understand where they are found, review the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of common tick-borne diseases, and discuss emerging threats such as Alpha-gal syndrome and the invasive Asian longhorned tick. The session will also highlight prevention strategies and practical considerations for healthcare providers serving communities at risk for tick-borne illnesses.

LCDR Michele Kerns is a preventive medicine veterinarian originally from the Kansas City area. After graduation from Kansas State University, LCDR Kerns spent 5 years as a veterinarian in the Army serving in Fort Campbell, KY, South Korea, and Camp Lejeune, NC where she then transferred into the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). Her prior USPHS assignments include working in food safety with USDA and providing front office support to the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health. In her spare time LCDR Kerns enjoys reading, travel, and spending time with her family.

She serves as the primary coordinator for the One Health Quarterly Webinar Series, where she advances a global, interdisciplinary approach to health that integrates human, animal, and environmental sectors. This collaborative framework strengthens public health practice, research, and education, ultimately improving health outcomes across populations.
