In this presentation, Dr. Hains examines culturally informed approaches to Indigenous health diagnosis, including the application of the Cultural Formulation Interview and WHODAS 2.0. Through case-based examples, Dr. Hains demonstrates how integrating Indigenous perspectives with established diagnostic frameworks can support ethical, culturally responsive care.

Dr. Hains has received a number of Excellence in Teaching Awards and was the recipient of the Emory Cowen Dissertation Award from Division 27 of the APA. Dr. Shaun Hains was recently recognized by the Women’s Office of the APA as a part of the Inspiring Histories, Inspiring Lives – Women of Color in Psychology. After receiving the Emory L. Cowen Dissertation Award from APA’s Division 27, Society for Community Research and Action for her dissertation titled “An Emerging Voice” Dr. Hains began the process of defining Native Research and Ethics, an initial framework for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada’s and the Canadian Institute for Health Research, “Ethical Guidelines for Research with Native Subjects”. Dr. Hains’ work in Ethics and Research involves placing the voice with the Eagle Feather for the love of land, language, and learning, amongst Native American peoples and within the dialogues of Health, Education, and Ethics. Recently, she completed writing about the eagles flying above schools after decades of success. Dr. Hains is a member of the International Council of Psychologists, the Psychology Coalition at the United Nations, a member of the Native Research Network, a member of the Society for Indian Psychologists, and a member of the Otipemisiwak Métis Nation in Alberta, Canada
